Working in the USA

The USA is renowned for being difficult to get into. Although progress has been made recently, it is still a bit more complicated to have a working holiday in the USA. But there are still several options for Aussies who want to spend some serious time stateside and earn some money and experience while they are there. Organisations that recruit Aussies to work on the summer camps for American kids, in ski resorts or as nannies have been sourcing labour from down under for a long time and offer several months working in the US in a live-in job and time to travel and spend the little money you have earned. These programs act as your sponsor while you are working in the USA qualifying for a work permit.

Another option for young Aussies is the recently introduced J1 ‘Exchange visitor program’. Since 2007 this visa, similar to a holiday working visa, is open to current and recently graduated uni students with a sponsor. This allows you to work for 12 months in a profession of your choice, so you can either pursue employment within the traditional holiday working industries like hospitality or Ski resorts, or for the career focussed you can try something more professional.
