Rabies In Bali Update

• October 25, 2010

A recent spate of rabies cases in Bali has caused a shortage of the rabies vaccine on the Island.  Over 100 people have now officially died from rabies since the initial outbreak in 2008 and the outbreak shows no real sign of going away.   The ‘earth times’ reported this month that between January and June, more than 3,500 people were bitten by dogs, compared to 2,400 in the same period last year. Rabies is contracted from the bite of an infected animal, so this increase is obviously a worry for the islands residents and visitors.  While the vast majority of attacks are reported by locals, it pays to be cautious around the many sick looking dogs wandering around the island, as there have been as many as 30 tourists a month needing treatment after contact with animals.

Check out Dr.Adams page on Rabies for more on the disease.
