Crewing & Cruising

cruise med Crewing & Cruising Crewing a yacht is a neat little plan of action. It serves as a job and a form of transport, killing two birds with one watery stone.

Crewing

Crewing a yacht can be a great way to get where you are going and gain some experience and cash on the way.

Things you need:

  • Fitness – because you won’t be lying around on deck chilling out the whole time
  • 12 months remaining on your passport – as this is required to sail in most countries.
  • Sea legs (or at least some medication to get you through)
  • Tolerance for others – because once you choose your skipper you are stuck with them on a relatively small boat. Choose carefully.
  • Enough money to get yourself home by other means if one way was enough.
  • Some skippers will require sailing experience

Places to start looking for crew opportunities:

Crew Seekers (www.crewseekers.net)  skippers desperately seeking crew for all duties including cooks and waiting staff – for those of us without impressive sailing experience.

Sail Net (www.sailnet.com) a good classified section allows you to look for work or offer your services with an ad.

Sun Sail (www.sunsail.com) Lists jobs for qualified sailors as well as general resort staff mainly in the Mediterranean

The Float Plan (www.thefloatplan.com) browse the crew wanted section to see if this is something you would be up for.

Cruising

Very different to crewing a yacht, but similarly located on the ocean, this is another way to make money on route. This is possible less cool than crewing, you are more likely to feel like you are working on a floating resort (which of course you can’t leave at the end of the day) You may have to wear a coloured jacket and smile at lot at passengers, but it will take you around the world and you will meet loads of people on route.

Cruise man (www.cruiseman.com/cruiseshipjobs.htm)  US based site with job advice and listings.

Cruise Community (www.cruise-community.com)  will point you in the direction of big cruise companies.

Cruise staff (www.cruisestaff.com.au)  specifically recruits Aussies.
